Jekyll Island Land Use Update

Spring 2018

Ball State University

Programs Used

GeoPlanner, ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, CityEngine, GeoDesign Hub, ArcGIS StoryMap, Photoshop, & InDesign

Using data rich geospatial modeling programs, our studio was tasked with developing a vision for the future and  three land use plans to help execute that vision for Jekyll Island. Jekyll Island plays an important role as one of Georgia’s barrier reef islands, rich in tidal wetlands, dunes, and other diverse ecosystems. It is home to over 1,000 wildlife species and has a unique history serving as a playground for the United States most wealthy characters including John D. Rockefeller.

Unfortunately, the island is experiencing too much love from its visitors who come to enjoy the slow beach life. The design takes a proactive approach to address issues of sea level rise and climate change including managed retreat and a more adaptive land use plan. National Park designation was also considered as a protection and research strategy for the island. ArcGIS StoryMap was used to help tell Jekyll Island's unique story.
